Coloured Diamonds
The dictionary defines diamond as a “transparent very hard precious gemstone”. This does not sound very inspiring for one of the worlds most aspirational, prized and precious gemstones.
Diamonds have been in our psyche for hundreds, if not thousands of years. They are gems of legend, mystery and myth, many of the most famous diamonds have very dark histories.
Most diamonds used as gemstones are transparent in colour. However it is the relatively rare coloured diamonds that are the most valuable.

Impurities and structural imperfections cause different colours in diamonds. Colours include yellow, pink, blue, red, green, and brown.
Diamonds of intense or unusual colour are sometimes labelled "fancy" by the diamond industry and are the most sought after by collectors.
Blue Diamonds
Among some of the worlds most valuable and rare diamonds are blue diamonds. Blue diamonds owe their colour to the presence of the chemical element Boron during the gems formation.
A blue diamond was included as the centrepiece in the Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Sale in Geneva on the 12th May 2009.
Graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as fancy vivid blue in colour and flawless in clarity, the highest ranking the GIA can award to any diamond. The 7.03 carat, cushion shaped diamond is smaller than a penny piece.
It was cut from a 23.58 carat rough diamond discovered in 2008 at Petra Diamonds historic Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa. The Cullinan mine is considered to be the worlds most consistently reliable source of blue diamonds and this blue diamond is considered to be exceptional even among other blue diamonds.
The Diamond achieved a world record price of £6.2 million! As well as becoming the owner of this fabulous diamond the buyer will have the privilege of naming it!
